Here is a selection of stills from the Two By Two pilot. This 9 minute, stop-motion animation was Emily Dodge's senior degree project at Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. This animation, filmed in 16 mm, features quirky animals finding refuge on a floating boat during an epic flood.
Since its release in 2003, Two By Two has been shown at 13 film festivals worldwide. The animation short has been recognized as "...both visually and conceptually intriguing,"(KaraFilm Festival) and said to be a "gut-splitting animated adventure" by the Planet in Focus Film Festival. On the premiere showing of Two By Two, the short was awarded a CINE Award for "innovation and ingenuity in film"CINE Lab.
The pilot's success was the key factor in the creation of the feature length movie, Two By Two,
and has inspired StartMotions to make the next animation in the same
manner, using recycled materials! Excessive waste was a growing concern
for the filmmaker, and that's when she decided to make a movie that
educates people around the world about the fragility of environment.
The reused and recycled palette inspires creative use of materials
never before used in these animation. Broken car glass, for example,
became the glistening ocean. The relationship between the theme of the
movie and the way in which it is made has become the essence of
StartMotions and the Two By Two project.
